About

We are Hull’s only female barbershop chorus, formed in 2018. We are a small chorus, but our passion for singing together is huge. If you are thinking of joining us, you’ll find us welcoming, friendly and encouraging.

Barbershop

Barbershop is a form of a cappella (unaccompanied) singing which became popular in the USA at the turn of the 20th century. However it differs from other forms of a cappella singing in that it has four voice parts (one melody part and three harmony parts), and one of the harmony parts is predominantly above the melody. We sing both the more traditional barbershop style where all the parts are mostly singing the words, along with looser barbershop style arrangements where the harmony parts sing a lot of “doo”, “ba” and “oo”s.

It’s come a long way since then. Listen to our group and you might hear a bit of Carole King, Doris Day or even One Direction – though we do revisit the old stuff occasionally. It’s all about the satisfaction of ringing those chords.

Joining us

We are always on the lookout for new singers, and we welcome anyone who identifies as female or non-binary with open arms.

We are currently especially looking for alto voices to fill our bass and baritone sections, but mezzos and sopranos are welcome to join.

Our rehearsals are always open to prospective singers, simply get in touch using the form below, by email, or send us a Facebook message!

Pre-requisites

Although previous singing experience and musical training is helpful, these aren’t requirements for joining us. And don’t worry if you can’t read music, we use learning tracks so you can learn your part by ear!

What we do ask from our singers is dedication and commitment to our ethos: we work hard to ensure we provide our audiences with exciting and high-quality performances. We meet weekly and ask our singers to learn their part using the learning tracks provided outside of rehearsal so that our time together can be spent on vocal craft and improving our performance as a group.

The process

If you would like to join us, please come along to a rehearsal and get stuck in – we will provide you with the sheet music for the evening, and at the end of the evening, we’ll ask you to take a very simple voice test to help you work out which part is best for you to sing with.

You then get another five weeks to decide whether we are the right group for you!

We are always happy to welcome anyone with a good voice, a keen ear and desire for hard work to reach your potential!
